A little history about the show Grilldog Presents:…
Years ago (1990) I stumbled upon Public Access Television (in Virginia) and began dreaming of my own show. As a hobby, I studied a little acting, producing, directing etc. I was in a few plays, a commercial for Japanese Airlines and was even approached to be an outfielder in the movie Dave.
I also learned computer based graphic design and desktop publishing, computer animation, etc. As well, as providing support to the Department of Defense which has had me travel quite a bit around our little world. When traveling, I'd typically, purchase cook books that focused on the local cuisine of where I was visiting and read the books on the long plane ride home. All the while, designing recipes with my own special flair as well as working on the Master Plan for a TV Show, that was different from the rest.
It was early 2005 that I approached Cox Public Access in San Diego with my idea for a show. They liked the idea and I started filming. However, because I didn't live in the right zip code I couldn't use any of the station's equipment or even their studio... Therefore, I used a lot of my savings to get started.
Around Feb of 2006, I had several shows and Cox started airing 1 episode a month (or when ever they felt like it). During this time I was migrating from using the iMovie software towards becoming a master in the Final Cut Pro applications (which, yes, once again, took a lot of my own savings). In December of 2006 I had completely re-edited my first 6 shows in iMovie and started editing completely in Final Cut Pro. With a might tighter design and better graphics, I approved Time Warner Public Access in San Diego...
Time Warner was excited and immediately started airing Grilldog Presents: every Friday Night! Now that’s cool, although it’s still just Public Access TV (which means it’s pretty much all volunteers (who get to eat well) and I still fit the bill for everything). Therefore, although I'm constantly getting requests from local actors, actresses and foodies to be on the show, once they find out I can't pay them, you can see the rubber tread marks burned permanently in the ground at my door step. I can even here it when they press the delete key on their keyboard, sounds like a sonic boom! LOL... just teasing, maybe ;-) the said part is, that at least doing my show is a plus on their resume, it is aired on TV! Also, good practice and we really have a damned good time filming (just no one talk to me about the egg episode... I was seriously PMS'ng that day... I drink to forget).
Today (early 2007), I have the pre and post production work smoothed out and can whip out a show pretty easily. I have one Digital Camera and a High End Macintosh Production Computer system that I edit each show myself using the Final Cut Pro Package of applications. About 2/3rds of my shows I film in my backyard (which looks bigger on camera then it really is! LOL). Occasionally, I get a sponsor that provides food and location. (let me take a moment to make a shameless plug for the Hacienda de las Rosas Winery in Ramona and T&H Prime Meats and Sausages in San Marcos – I can do shameless well). Then I can film on location (with my one camera) where I can move around more and don’t have to worry about set changes as much. Because this is Public Access Television a sponsor can not give me money to advertise their product on the show. However, the sponsor can donate something and I can “Thank” them on the show. I know it’s a grey area, which I exploit often! LOL (I'm great at exploiting a loop hole...)
As with just about all the other hopefuls out there, I see many of them on My Space, I dream of making real TV. Actually, I don’t want to be on the Food Network. I see myself as more of Fox, MTV or a Cable/Satellite special. Therefore, my current drive is to start marking myself and gathering more exposure (Maybe not as much Exposure as Bunnybunns.net has, but exposure none the less).
Currently, I’ve finished my draft recipe book and the folks at Lee Books and my friends here on the Forum (special thanks to Minxy, Cell and Mouri) are helping to edit it for me and hopefully it’ll be ready for production soon (if I can get a publisher LOL). That’s it for now. Please feel free to visit my website http://www.grilldog.com for all the latest and greatest information. Hope to hear from everyone.
