Another winner … I can see why .. but lets first repeat the recipe again from the book
Chipotle & Pepper Slaw
Grilldog needs to stop emailing his friends at work recipes for Pot Lucks. Several years later and another potluck, one of Grilldog’s friends wanted something spicy and different. So Good Ole Grilldog emailed the following recipe, which again won first place. <sigh>
5 tablespoons lemon juice
3 tablespoons mayonnaise -- fat free
2 tablespoons honey
5 cloves garlic
2 teaspoons chipotle pepper -- minced
1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
1 large red bell pepper
1 large green bell pepper
1 large yellow bell pepper
12 ounces jicama (it looks like a huge potato)
Puree first 6 ingredients in blender season with salt and pepper. Cut peppers and jicama into thin strips and toss all together. No Grilling just good food to go with grill’n food. Although the recipe doesn’t call for grilling, you could grill the garlic and peppers and make this a very interesting treat.
interesting treat indeed … I can see why it came first .. and u should stop mailing the formulas to ur so-called friends who would steel it on the first chance ..
it was as easy as the achhar (Indian term) u named pesto .. and yes the garlic and pepper were pretreated … only change was the whole mixture was fried lightly .. more like stirring in the fire …so the mayonnaise kept its shape .. and then salt was added during frying … turned out special .. oh and jicama was added after frying and cooling down to room temperature … we had it with hot paratha .. u know that triangular Indian fried bread ?? I bet u know it .. coz I kind of remember u telling me about the recipe .. a very mouth watering treat .. the duo … u know paratha with CP Slaw .. absolutely great .. specially the mayonnaise .. I can taste the bittersweet bellpepper as well as the spicy garlic taste .. and it was all accentuated and complemented with the lemon juice .. only next time I will drop the chilli powder .. I am not very fond of chilli .. great .. it really was great .. u are an wizard when it comes to small wonders like these .. these pestos and CP Slaws ..
Thanks Mouri, so you all slightly fried this hmmm that would be a bit different, but sounds yummy. Thanks for the great review. yes, you don't have to use the chili's that's for folks who like it HOT! LOL..
Will have to ask Minxy about the Jicama, exactly what it could be, what I found on the internet is like a turnip, looks like it, but will it be the same thing?
But if it is as great tasting as Mouri says (I do believe you) I will surely add the Chilli as that is also one of my favourite foodstuffs!!!
ursula, jicama is the big potato like thing .. it is called sakhaluu (or sweet potato) in bengali .. its like .. sweet and watery like a cucumber .. but its sweet .. and its white .. that is after u peal the skin .. we usually have it fresh and green .. like cucumber u know .. like as in salad .. uh .. is it any helpful ?? say .. try searching jicama in wikipedia, english .. and it will show u the picture of it .. hope that helps ...
thanx grilldog .. and yes .. we fried a bit .. but only very lightly .. and thats only because i dont like the taste of bellpappers when they are raw ... hope thats ok ?? why dont u try it fried ? plz ??? it tastes really good .. as i mentioned ..
Mouri,
Thanks girlfriend, Yes we do have sweet potatoe here, I checked the internet and what it came up for me was like a turnip, but if I make it I will rather use a sweet potatoe as that is what I love making as well with brown sugar, hmm Ruben's favourite as well - jeez he just likes food!!!
Our sweet potatoes we get is like purple in colour and is an oblong shape, but very nice and when we make it, we make it sweet with sugar and spice hmm divine!!!
oh wait wait wait .. guess i mis guided u .. that sweet potato is actually what we call rangaluu (meaning red potato) .. its purple and very very sweet ,... and it can be eaten after bakeing it lightly .. out sweet potato is white potato .. its like .. have a off white skin .. very thin skin .. more like scuamus tissue .. inside it is white .. stark white .. and juicy and its more crunchy than ur purple sweet potato .. which we call rangaluu .. aluu means potato here ..
uhh .. am i any help ?? sorry i mislead u there ..
by the way .. thats one thing my nephew ruben and i have in common .. we both love our food ,.. specially if they are prepared by our dear mama ...

Mouri,
Hmmm you silly girl, I'll get the right one from Minxy she's the expert I'm not that good, so will send her an e-mail and find out, she is the chef that I have contact with in SA and she will know for sure.
No problem friend, we all make mistakes and yes Ruben loves his Mom's food but his Granny's too, just wait until you have children of your own then you will see!!! Sometimes you will feel neglected!!!
i am happy being the youngest one o the familly as it is ..
so i guess that says how helpfull i m .. i have that effect on ppl .. may b thats why no body asks me for direction in the highway !!!
better luck with minix

.. y not ask gdog too .. he is more frequent than minix !!
well, Jicama is a mexican thing, it looks like a giant potato but is closer to a turnip. I'm not sure what a good So African subsitute would be generally folks say If you can't find sweet, crunchy jicama, you can substitute red radish slivers or mung bean sprouts. Hope that helps!
i wonder what red radish slivers or mung bean sprouts are !!
anyway .. see ursula .. i was right ..(albeit in a round about way) .. but i did mention sweet .. and white .. and crunchy .. and watery ..
i m soooo clever that sometime i surprise myself !!!
