Grilldog Presents: The Howler June 2010
Ode to my Dad.
This month is Father’s Day. So we remember dear old Dad. In 2008, I was a father for the first time and we all went out to my favorite Brunch at the 94th Aerosquardon in San Diego for father’s day last year. My wife bought me a great hammock to lay out in the San Diego sun. It lasted almost a year but it was one of the many treasures that we had to sell in order to go to Austin, Tx. Hopefully, I’ll get a new one this year. It’s been a rough couple of years for my family. 5 years ago Dad suffered a stroke just months after my marriage (and NO my marriage didn’t give him the stroke). Then 2 years ago Mom passed away after struggling with leukemia for years. Her final days were horrific to say the least. Unfortunately, she passed away just a few days before we discovered that my wife was pregnant with my first and only child. An event Mom always prayed for but died without knowledge. Dad has been on the down side ever since the stroke. The dementia slowly getting worst till now his body doesn’t even remember to breath.
A Long Long Time ago, I remember when… for a couple years when I was only 4 or 5 I can remember quite a number of close relatives passing away, my Mothers Mom (Mom Mom), my uncle, my Aunt (God Mother) and several others. It seemed like they might go to the doctor for some pain and then a couple months later. Dead. No long term suffering or struggles, just up and died. Pretty much painlessly. Since then our modern science has developed many many ways to prolong life and in my mind the suffering too. Not just for the sick but for their families as well. Unless you get hit buy a bus, it seems that most of us are doomed to a lingering death. So much for, “I hope I die in my sleep”.
Back in the day, I was a Mental Health Professional, I worked with many people who attempted suicide and worked side by side with colleagues who eventually took their own lives to end what ever demons they were dealing with. Amazing that death is all around us and something that we all will end up but it seems the last thing we talk about. I guess because the grim ripper is just that, grim.
I’m typing this section on May 29th, 2010 just hours after receiving that phone call from my sister that Dad’s body is rapidly failing fast. About the only thing he mutters is that he doesn’t want anyone to leave his side. Dad, despite his faults, we all have faults don’t forget, he was a proud man who unfortunately has been in such a state of dementia I don’t know if he really ever comprehended that I finally had a son to pass his name along too. An event he prayed for. As I said, Dad was always a proud man, he bravely went off to fight the war (WWII) when the country cried for help. Dad was one of the many lucky sailors that lived through the battle of Normandy on D Day. He was stationed at Portsmouth, England (a place I was honored to visit and bring back modern photos for him). I visited the WWII museum there and shuddered at the horrors. Of course almost everyone saw that Tom Hanks movie and grimaced at the blood shed. However, I’m hear to tell you that it was worst then your worst nightmare. There is no way anyone but a sicko would go and enjoy a movie that actually delivered an honest blow by blow account of what those young men, most not even 20 years old had to deal with. I think we forget that most of them were teenagers fighting that bloody war. Dad’s nightmares from that event never went away and he struggled when them his entire life. After the war, in the mid 50’s Dad and Mom met and together they struggled to raise “typical” American family. Whether or not I agree with their parental teachings, I can’t deny that in their minds they did everything they could to raise us as healthy productive human beings.
My Dad may not be with us by the time you all read this. In fact, I know he won’t be here for Father’s day this year. I’m also sure that many of you that read this may have lost one or both of your parents and know the feelings of lost. It’s a sad time for all, especially when the deaths are so long and drawn out. The impact on the family is more then can be described in words. This year, instead of a fancy buffet for me for Father’s day, I think I’ll just walk down to the local pub and buy a round of Seagram’s 7 for everyone and toast my father, that was his favorite drink…
May 29th, Dad Passed away, he shall be missed…

Hi gang, welcome to another edition of the Howler. Although it’s hot and humid in Austin, that’s not stopping Good ole Grilldog. I’m here with another page of insights, salutes and news. So sit back with your favorite cold beverage and enjoy!
AHHHHHHHH
My back up went bad and I lost all of my CGI graphics. Now I have to make new ones. OMG, will I ever get a break!
Grilldog TV!!!!
Special news Bulletin “Grilldog TV” is up and Running thanks to my friends up in San Francisco, the Injured Workers Group. Now every Friday Night from 8pm-9pm Pacific at http://injuredworkerstelevision.com/ You can watch another exciting episode or two of Grilldog presents.
NOTICE to all CAT/PAT stations!!!
Update, the server I use can’t handle the storage needed for my shows unless I pay a whopping upgrade so it’s going to be easier to mail them to you on DVD with 4 per episode as before. So if your station can’t afford Pegmedia any more, contact me and I’ll mail you the installments. Unfortunately, due to a family emergency I had to relocate out of San Diego to Austin TX and have been delayed getting out the next four pack. However, Great news! The DVD’s are going out this week! Hopefully!
Road Kill III: Battle for Supremacy update…
First, I’d like to say I’m sorry to the Traeger corporation, T&H Prime Meats and Sausages, NadaRed Vodka, Party Time Liquors, in El Cajon, Twin Oaks Winery, Jude Libermann and Lee Books, Bar Dog II, the gang at T&H Prime Meats and Sausages and Chef Billy “The Kid” for taking so long to edit and get the Road Kill III Battle for Supremacy edited and aired. However, It’s now completed. Yeah and ready to view, triple yeah!
Great News in Austin - The Weirdness is on the uprise exponentially.
Starting this month Channel Austin is not just going to be airing the entire series of Grilldog Presents on channel 10 but they are going to be streaming them too. Just one more opportunity for everyone to join in the Food, Fun and Friends of Grilldog Presents! Plus, we even have Austin Sponsors now, i.e. Pflugerville Propane, Black Dog Pub, The Meat House and Marisco’s Seafood Restaurant. But most impressively, BBQ’s Galore!
Being a Dad @ 50
1959 seems so far ago. My wife and I certainly are from different generations, that’s pretty evident when we play trivia pursuit at Wings n More. However, my son just being born in 2008 is certainly a new generation. I don’t even think we have a name for this one yet. I think the X Generation has been over for awhile. Maybe this will be the Obamatized generation! I certainly hope not. This point (generation gap, being a dad, etc) was asked of me a few days ago. A friend of mine was turning 50 and has never had children. However, recently, married or remarried, I don’t know, they want to have children, therefore, he was asking me what it was like being my age and having a toddler.
I think the problem with most parents is that they don’t tell other people what being a parent really is. It seems that @ 50, having studied sociology and psychology, to the point of getting a Masters Degree with a 3.96 GPA (out of 4), being a psychiatric social worker, a globe i.e. time traveler, etc that I would know pretty much everything there is…. NOT!
First of all, if I have a cold and snot comes out of my nose in a giant bubble, I’m calling the doctor. Poo only comes in one state, messy and stinky! However, I will leave all of that for now. Let’s refocus ourselves. I’m 50, have played competitive softball for 20 years, I even have been in international tournaments. I even have a gold medal however its a tad tarnished now. I’ve traveled the world and the last thing I’ve ever paid any mind to was my own health. Somewhere along the time lines of my childhood I decided I was invincible! Therefore, nothing like head dives into home plate or smashing my bike into a tree or jumping off the back of baseball stadiums (long stories). However, now I’m a Dad. I’m 50, I’ve a bad rotator cup, my knees feel like shredded glass when it gets cold and I don’t need a weather man to predict precipitation! Enough said. I now find myself, my body, my ailing psychically aged and tormented body, to be my 25lb toddlers favorite jungle gym, swing, climbing wall and of course, my favorite, a lazy boy recliner. Therefore, if you are considering having children, no matter at what age, besides the hours kids keep and everything else you’ve heard, be warned, be in shape. Now that’s some Good Grilldog Advice to Live By! Oh, for my next b-day, please send a Costco size bottle of muscle ointment, Thanks!!! Oh, and the worst part is he’s only 25lbs NOW, I’ve a lot of getting in shape to do!!! Cause he’s just going to keep growing and growing and growing and I’m getting older and older and older. Time for my nap!
Grilldog’s Progress Report for June.
Another new month of challenges for Good ole Grilldog. Don’t have any episodes scheduled to be filmed in June. I’ve a few surprises I’m working on but I’m waiting for feedback. I should have two more episodes ready by the end of the month and hopefully another four back by the end of July. Hopefully. So keep watching for the Howler each month, check out my website occasionally and don’t forget I’m on twitter, myspace and facebook, just for your convenience! Arn’t I a nice guy!
Jr Dog Update
Jr Dog loves the park and I take him there when ever I have the chance, at 18 months he loves the outdoors. He can’t get enough of the swings, sliding board and climbing all over his dad! Although we were in the shade he did get a sunburn. My fault, I’m not use to this Austin Sun, from now on I’m putting on him tons of sunscreen.
Available Mid June
Our latest 4 episode disc features:
#56 Bloody Sunday - Grilldog makes a variety of crazy Bloody Mary’s, actually it’s more of an around the world trip.
#57 Food of the Gods II: Truffles, this is a tribute to the Late Chef Nancy Belaise who passed away last year and was an inspiration to Grilldog and all that knew her. She is missed.
#58 Grilldog’s 50th Birthday Grilldog Grills up a batch of recipes, BBQ and BBQ accompaniments, a must see and tasty episode.
and
#59 Road Kill III: Battle for Supremacy - In Part 1 Grilldog and Billy start the prep on all 9 of their meats, i.e. Ostrich Fillets, Buffalo Tri Tips, Elk Steaks, Antelope Flank Steaks, Wild Boar Butt, Alligator Sirloin, Rocky Mt Oysters, Rabbit and Big Horn Sheep. In this episode Grilldog demonstrates and completes the Wild Boar Butt, Antelope Flank Steaks, Alligator Sirloin and Big Horn Sheep. In Part 2, Grilldog will demonstrate the remaining recipes as well as will find out the winner of the competition. Honestly, two cooks making 9 recipes each in a cook off, is a lot of hard work, but it was a lot of fun too.
Available towards the end of June or July
Episode 60 Road Kill III part 2
Episode 61 Grilled Stuffed Swordfish
Episode 62 Veritably Vodka

Grilldog Sightings: Grilldog has been seen at Chuck E Cheese’s, Marisco’s on 6th street, all over Channel Austin, Wings n More, Pflugerville Park, Black Dog Pub, riding his cycle in the rain on Interstate 35, tagging behind Grillpup at WalMart(s), Pflugerville Propane and the Pflugerville Animal Hospital on Pecan street, BBQ Galores in Bat Cave and generally all over Austin.
A Good Grilldog Tip To Live By for June:
Just remember that when you point your finger, 4 fingers point back at yourself. Don’t be quick to judge. Always ask yourself if what you are doing is really worthwhile. Remember, not making a decision IS a decision. Also, Mushrooms grow best in poop and in dark places, people don’t. Just remember, Not enough sun is just as bad as Not enough sun!
Four Paws and a Tail Salute award for this month goes to…
BBQ’s Galore in Austin and Bat Cave for their great service and dedication!
The Meat House in Bat Cave
Black Dog Pub for great customer service
and Pflugerville Propane.
Grilldog’s Hindleg Salute goes too…
The Austin Flea Market. # 8 in the country my ass. If you are ever in Austin and here the news about what a great flea market they have here, pass it up. Go to WalMart instead! It’s your basic flea market, the prices are a bit jacked up so I guess you have to barter with them. However, I can get just as good if not better merchandise at WalMart and a lot cheaper too. Plus, if it’s not what I wanted I can take it back. I can’t say that the flea market is a bad one. The reason I’m giving it a hind leg salute is because how pompous they are in comparing themselves with other flea markets around the country. My wife, Toddler and I cruised through the entire market in about 20 minutes, including a pee break.
note: yes they whined to me that there was a fire a couple years ago and they never really recovered and what is there now is about 1/3 of what it use to be. Sounds like a fire sale to me. I guess no one has decided to take the time to post anything new on their site only about how great it is still being viewed. Anyway, it’s a waste of time, don’t go there.

Grilldog’s 2nd Recipe book Grilldog Turns 50 celebrates the first 50 episodes of Grilldog Presents. We are a bit behind but it’s going great. It’s not just going to feature ALL the recipes and tips of the 1st 50 episodes, it’s also going to have behind the scenes gossip of each show as well as new pictures. Plus, they’ll be a pick or two of each show’s handwritten scripts! Originals by Grilldog, detailing his plans for the episode. Certainly a collector’s edition! Actually, I haven’t done crap with the book in about 9 months, but it’s on my to-do list, as well as looking for my to-do list.
GRILLDOG’S 2nd RECIPE BOOK “Grilldog’s 50th Celebration”
is delayed!!
I’m still working on my second book, Grilldog’s 50th Celebration. This book is not just a synopsis and story guide to my first 50 episodes, it also contains all the recipes from all of the 1st 50 episodes. I know everyone has been asking for this so it’s on the way. I was hoping to complete the book and publish it on my birthday 10/18 when I turn 50, however, between work and traveling I think I’ll only have the draft completed by then. I’ll still have to add the photos and edit the text and add the table of contents etc.
